World Osteoporosis Day- Strong Bones for Healthier & Happier Future

20Oct 2019

Marked as the 23rd Osteoporosis Day, today (20th Oct) the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) launches a year-long global campaign to raise awareness about diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of metabolic bone disease and osteoporosis. So, how well do you know your bone, are you at the risk of developing osteoporosis?

At present, over 200 million adults suffer from osteoporosis worldwide, affecting every one in five men and one in three women. If these trends continue, then the number of victims is believed to double up in a span of five years.

What is Osteoporosis?
Your bone is composed of various minerals and tissues. In osteoporosis, the loss of these essential tissues and minerals makes the bone weak and brittle. It becomes so fragile that even the slightest amount of stress like bending, falling or coughing can trigger debilitating, life-threatening and painful fractures. Such fractures cause disability and most importantly alter the quality of life. As many as 75% of fractures remain undiagnosed, which leaves the patient prone to more fractures.

Significance of World Osteoporosis Day (WOD)
World Osteoporosis Day is a global call dedicated to making people aware of the importance of early action for protecting muscle and bone health so as to enjoy a healthy life without any physical dependency.

2 Simple Steps for Prevention of Osteoporosis
Prevention of osteoporosis is the need of the hour, and this can be accomplished by following a two-step approach:

Step 1: Diet Rich of Bone Healthy Nutrients
Calcium, proteins, vitamin D and micronutrients are the keys to healthy and strong bones. Thus, to reduce the risk of osteoporosis incorporate:

  • Foods that are a good source of calcium such as milk, almonds, green vegetables, tofu, broccoli, and figs to aid in better nerve and muscle functions.

  • Good quality protein found in lean meat, lentils, fish, nuts, beans, flaxseeds, and dairy products.

Step 2- Exercises for Promoting Blood Circulation through Bones
When performed consistently, Exercises enhance bone density, muscle strength, and aid in balance and flexibility which reduces the scope of osteoporosis to a dramatic extent.  Some of the key exercises include:

  • Isometric exercises

  • Isotonic exercises

  • Isoinertial exercises

  • Strengthening exercises

  • Stretching exercises

  • Posture balance exercises

  • Cardiovascular exercises

  • Running/ Jogging

On this Osteoporosis Day take a pledge to always keep your bones strong and healthy for a happier and fulfilling future.
